International Students at St Mary’s

International students live in Anne Symington House with boarders from across Western Australia. The Head of Boarding, her staff, and the school’s Pastoral Care staff care for your daughter whilst she is at school.

The school’s International Student Co-ordinator works with the International Student Group on a range of activities including the organisation of the annual Harmony Week, a Multicultural Food Fair and a Multicultural Assembly. There are also opportunities for St Mary’s international students to meet with international students from other Perth schools.

The Australian Government wants overseas students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding place to study. Australia’s laws promote quality education and consumer protection for overseas students.

Teaching and Learning

Junior School: Years 1 – 6

While the Junior School is innovative and constantly evolving, the educational philosophy of St Mary’s places strong emphasis on the basic skills of literacy and numeracy.  Strong literacy and numeracy skills enable girls to gain further knowledge through research and inquiry based learning.  The Junior School believe that girls need to become independent learners who are able to meet all new learning experiences with confidence.

The classroom teachers are responsible for planning and implementing challenging academic programmes with the emphasis on the individual child and their specific needs.  The girls are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, always endeavouring to apply maximum effort to each learning experience

Senior School: Years 7 – 12

The next exciting step in your daughter’s education begins in Senior School, where many challenges and rewards lie ahead and where she will begin to make decisions and choices that will affect her life beyond school. Here intellectual and personal growth and academic achievement are of primary importance.

St Mary’s vision includes a commitment to providing an innovative curriculum that equips girls for future study, life and work in the 21st century. The broad but rigorous curriculum recognises students’ wide spectrum of abilities, interests and ambitions and embraces innovation in classroom practices and the integration of technology. The Senior School comprises over 950 students from Years 7 to 12.

Year 7

Year 7 provides an introduction to the Senior School, allowing girls a unique introduction to the opportunities and challenges Senior School brings, while still retaining the core pastoral care a central classroom provides.

A balance between the challenges of specialist subject areas and pastoral care within the classroom make this an invaluable step in the learning journey. Support is given to every student in the development of personal organisation and time management, research and presentation skills, which combine to produce independent, life-long learners. The reasoning behind this model is that we believe that knowing one teacher especially well has considerable benefits for this age group.

  The Learning Programme

Year 7s are members of the Senior School and involved in all aspects of Senior School life. In   addition to the core subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Technology and Enterprise, taught with their classroom teachers, the girls study Art, Debating, Drama, Health Education, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Library, Literature and Research, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education with specialist teachers. Interactive whiteboards are also an important tool in assisting with the Year 7 teaching and learning programme.

Developing the Whole Person

Year 7 is a year in which the girls try new things, make new friends, learn new skills and find their own voice all within the nurturing environment this unique year provides. Year 7 at St Mary’s includes six classes of girls and the new Year 7 facilities include seven classrooms, an IT laboratory, a Science laboratory and the Learning Support Unit.
The beginning of the year is marked with an outdoor education camp which provides an opportunity for everyone to get to know each other. Later in the year the girls travel to Canberra and Sydney as the culmination of their Year 7 studies.

Girls can explore their interests and develop their talents in the vibrant extracurricular programme of sport, music, dance, drama and after-school clubs.

Years 8, 9 and 10

In Years 8 to 10, girls study a core curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences subjects. Year 8s follow a compulsory programme, which includes studying one or two languages of French, German, Italian or Japanese. In Years 9 and 10, more individual choice is offered with a variety of elective subjects that are enriching, intellectually stimulating, useful and enjoyable. Dance, Electronics, Marine Science, Creative Crafts and Digital Design are just some on offer.

Extension programmes challenge academically gifted students, many of whom experience outstanding success in statewide and national competitions. There is also additional support from specialised staff, who work towards improving skills in literacy and numeracy in a positive, productive and encouraging environment. In most cases, both programmes contribute to an enhanced overall performance. Career education and work experience are aspects of the Year 10 course, which contribute greatly to personal development and an increasing maturity.

Years 11 and 12

A wide range of Year 11 and 12 courses, from Physics to French, Economics to Physical Education Studies, Accounting to Drama, provide for students planning to pursue a university degree. Other courses, such as Food Science and Business Management prepare students for destinations such as TAFE, for employment, traineeships, specialist colleges and for life in an ever-changing world. In addition, students can participate in CareerLink, a selective programme in association with employers, which allows Year 12 students to gain workplace training one day a week and provides an excellent foundation for prospective employment.

Computer technology is an integral part of the curriculum in many study areas. A modern Information Technology Centre, comprising the automated Senior School Library and the Technology and Enterprise Department, with Windows and Apple Mac laboratories linked to the Internet, is a centre of activity within the school.

 Boarding Facilities

The Boarding House, Anne Symington House, is located in the centre of the school campus and is the hub of all things boarding.

The girls are surrounded by our state of the art facilities which they have access to outside of school hours.

Facilities within Anne Symington House include:

  • recently renovated bathrooms and showers,
  • wireless access on the ground floor,
  • a suite of computers and iPads available for study, and
  • a number of spacious common rooms with couches, flat screen televisions, board games and other activities.

There are six bedroom wings within the boarding house, each one accommodating girls from Years 7 to 12. Younger girls share a bedroom while girls in Year 12 have their own room. Bedrooms are bright and modern with:

  • reverse cycle air conditioning
  • indivdual study areas
  • Internet and network connection

The girls enjoy a light and airy Dining Room on the ground floor of Anne Symington House where our own Chef provides nutritionally balanced meals and caters for the needs and diets of all students.

The school is nestled behind Trigg Beach and boarders enjoy the beautifully landscaped school grounds, pleasant outside seating areas and access to a vast array of different recreational activities such as a 50m heated swimming pool, tennis courts, dance studios, gymnasium, music rooms and much more.

Boarders also have after-hours access to academically focused school facilities including the Library and IT Centre where school teaching staff are always willing to develop their learning programmes further.

A Day in the Life of a Boarding Student

A typical day in the life of a boarding student at St Mary’s…

Our Year 7 boarding students recently wrote about what a typical day is like for them at the St Mary’s boarding house, and th

ought it would be helpful for other girls to learn about how much fun it is.

Details such as room configurations and bedtimes vary across age groups.

7.00am- Wake up. The house mothers wake you up each morning by knocking on your door and saying ‘Good Morning’. It is pretty much like home.

Shower/Change. You are not allowed to go to breakfast in your pyjamas so most of us shower and get ready for school before breakfast. Some of the girls go to breakfast early. You can also have sport training before school so this makes your mornings a little busier, but they also have a ‘grab and go’ breakfast if you are really busy.

8.00am- Breakfast finishes. We have lots of different things for breakfast including cooked breakfast, fresh fruit salad, bircher muesli, yoghurt and flavoured milk. Our Chef (Eric) is French and he is great and always wants to make us happy. We have a food comment box to write suggestions, and a recipe of the month competition where someones recipe from home is cooked for everyone.

8.40am– We leave for school. Dressed to impress in our wonderful uniforms!

8.45am– The school day commences and we have classes in so many different subjects it is fantastic. We really do have a lot of fun and whilst the work is quite tough our teachers are all really lovely and help us along the way.

10.50am- Recess. We come back to the boarding house to collect our recess snack where Mrs Campbell and Mrs Pendergrast are always there with a smile to say hello.

1.10pm- Lunch. Lunch is served outside of the boarding house and we all sit on the grassed area outside to have our lunch. This area is known as the Boarders Lawn since it is so full of boarders every lunchtime from every year group. We often see our ‘Big Sisters’ at this time who check that we are going OK. Having a friend in Year 10 is excellent!

3.35pm– The school day ends and afternoon tea is served in the courtyard. It’s always yummy and is a time to sit and relax with friends from lots of different year groups and the boarding staff. Often we then have sports training, or Sewing Club or Art Club to rush off to or we have leisure time. The Café is open in the boarding house which is like a tuck shop and on Mondays and Thursdays we collect our washing that has been done for us and check to see if we have got a Tidy Room Award.

5.30pm – 6.15pm- Dinner is served. There is hot food, as well as a salad bar every day.

6.30pm – 8.30pm- Prep begins. This is supervised in the dining room for us and we have four tutors work alongside us to help us with our work. These tutors have all been to St Mary’s as boarders so they know how hard some of the work can be. We are all learning a lot and now finding our feet with what is expected of us. The tutors are really great. There is also a Maths Club on Monday night and an English Club on Wednesday night when the teachers come to help us.

8.30pm – 9.00pm- Supper. This is run by GAP students who are like older sisters to us. They have finished school overseas and come to live and work in the boarding house for six months. We have bread and toast and we love the hot chocolate and milo machine at this time.

9.00pm- Bedtime. We are checked at this time and need to be ready for bed at 9.00pm. Often we will then read or chat with our room mate for a little while about our days.

9.15pm– Lights out. Exhausted, we jump into bed and soon fall asleep, ready to do it all again!
